Welcome to the main speakers

The main speakers will make formal 30 – 40 minute presentations in the plenary sessions. They will also participate in some workshops & concurrent sessions at the same time as the parallel sessions. The main speakers are interested to share with conference attendees, their expertise in the theme of the conference. During two full days, conference attendees have a chance to meet the main speakers and talk with them informally about the hot issues of IFRS, as well as the issues arising from their presentation

Dr. Zhang Wei-Guo

Dr. Zhang previously worked as Chief Accountant and Director General of the Department of International Affairs at the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC). He has been actively involved in accounting standard setting and implementation issues, auditor oversight, and cross-border regulatory co-operation issues at the CSRC and through his work with the International Organization of Securities Commissions. From 1998 and 2004 respectively, Dr Zhang was a member of the China Accounting Standards Committee and the China Auditing Standards Committee. Before joining the CSRC, he was Head of the Department of Accounting at Shanghai University of Finance & Economics (SUFE) where he also received his PhD in economics. Dr Zhang was a PhD supervisor at SUFE from 1993 and at Tsinghua University from 2000. He has published a number of articles and monographs on issues related to accounting, corporate governance, and globalisation. In accordance with the rules applying to IASB appointments, Dr Zhang relinquished his employment with the CSRC upon taking up his appointment.

Kevin is the Chairman of Asian-Oceanian Standard-Setters Group, Member, New Zealand Accounting Standards Board, Member, Australian Financial Reporting Council, and Adjunct Professor, University of Queensland. He is Experienced in dealing with complex financial reporting issues both in practice and in the development of Australian and International Financial Reporting Standards and Interpretations. He experienced in building technically oriented entities whether in practice or in standard-setting. He involved in introducing the original conceptual framework into Australian standard setting, expanding standard-setting into the public sector, helping shift the focus in Australia to international standards, establishing the Norwalk Agreement between the IASB and FASB, positioning interpretation in IFRS, moving to integrate the FASB and IASB frameworks, projects and staffing, and in developing and positioning the 2005 IFRS stable platform. His significant experience in various countries in introducing accrual accounting and standards into the public sector financial reporting standards.

Abbas is a key member of Deloitte Middle East’s Regional Technical/IFRS Team as “IFRS Leader”. He is also an author of more than 14 books on International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). He has chaired the “World Accounting Summit” for seven years; and has addressed the “World Congress of Accountants” in Turkey, where accounting bodies from more than 100 countries are invited to participate. At the UN in Geneva he was elected Chairman of the 21st session of UNCTAD’s Intergovernmental Working Group of Experts on International Standards on Accounting & Reporting (“ISAR”). Professor Spear holds the GL Wood Professor of Accounting, Deputy Dean- Faculty of Business and Economics and Director of the Graduate School of Business and Economics in the Faculty of Business and Economics. He is the Director of Graduate School of Business and Economics, – University of Melbourne. Professor Spear received his PhD from the University of North Texas in 1992. He is a Fellow Certified Practicing Accountant. Professor Spear has published in leading international accounting journals such as the Journal of Accounting and Economics, Contemporary Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting Literature, International Journal of Accounting, Journal of Business Finance and Accounting, and Management and Information Technology. Professor Spear is a Co-Editor of the International Journal of Accounting and serves on the editorial board of a number of academic journals.

Dr. Ahmad Almeghames is the secretary general of the Saudi Organization for Certified Public Accountants. He is a member of a number of local and international organization, among which the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Institution, Professional Accountants Organization Developing Committee of the IFAC, The National Organization for Assessment and Accreditation. Dr. Almeghames is a member of the board and audit committee of a number of Saudi corporations. Dr Almaeghames earns his PhD in accounting from Mississippi State University, USA and SOCPA certificate from the Saudi Organization for Certified Public Accountants. Dr. Almeghames has several published articles and he is an active participants in several local and international conferences.

Dr. Mostaq Muhammed Hussain is an Associate Professor of Accounting in the Faculty of Business at University of New Brunswick-Saint John. He graduated from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, and received his Ph.D. in Accounting from the University of Vaasa, Finland. He worked in Japan, Sweden, Finland and Oman before he joined UNBSJ in 2006. He is the Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Accounting and Finance (IJAF), and International Journal of management Development (IJMD). His fields of research are in management accounting practices in organizations, performance management and measurement in services. He has been working for accreditation and developing graduate and undergraduate programs at different universities in the Middle-east and in Canada. He has published a number of articles in international refereed journals, and received more than two dozens of scholarships/awards on his academic activities from different institutions in Finland, Sweden, Japan, Norway, UK and Canada, including Literati Club’s “Awards for Excellence”, and Sultan Qaboos University’s “Distinguished Research Award.

Kumar Dasgupta' journey with IFRSs started in London when he joined the International Accounting Standards Board (the body responsible for developing IFRSs) as project manager and was responsible for the current standards on financial instruments, IAS 32, 39 and IFRS 7. Subsequent to the IASB, he worked with Barclays Capital UK advising on the accounting and valuation implications arising from the implementation of IFRS. From banking he moved to practice where he worked with the Global desk at KPMG UK dealing with the financial instrument accounting issues under IFRSs. In this capacity he has dealt with most of the major financial institutions in the UK including HSBC, Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse First Boston, Goldman Sachs. He moved to India in 2008 with PwC and currently he is the National partner responsible for Treasury, Market Risk and Financial Instruments Accounting in India and he is also responsible for delivery of IFRS conversion projects in some of the largest listed clients of the firm including of the largest bank in India. He is a member of the Reserve Bank of India Committee on IFRS and Chair of the sub-committee on impairment and also the committee set up by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Committee on Securitisations. He also is a member of the PwC Global IFRS Banking Committee. He is a Chartered Accountant from both India and England and alumni of the London Business School where he did his Masters specialising in quantitative finance.

Guillermo Braunbeck is currently an Academic Fellow at the IFRS Foundation since September 2011. He obtained his PhD degree in Accounting at University of Sao Paulo and currently is in sabbatical leave from his docent position at Fipecafi(University of Sao Paulo related foundation dedicated to research and professional training in accounting). He has graduated in economics right before joining Arthur Andersen in Brazil, where he worked in the assurance services area, mainly engaged in financial statement audits and due diligences. He also worked as internal audit head and risk manager as well as senior consultant in acquisition and post-merger activities. Mr. Braunbeck has engaged himself in several initiatives to promote high quality reporting, includingprojects for Brazilian Federal Council of Accounting, World Bank and more recently, for the UNCTAD (ISAR) in the “Capacity-building for high-quality corporate reporting” initiative.

Thomas is a Senior Principal with Ernst & Young’s Assurance practice. Thomas is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Prior to rejoining Ernst & Young in 2006, he lead the Financial reporting function for a leading bank in the region. He has over 17 years of experience, a substantial portion of which was spent in the Middle East. Thomas is the designated Technical Executive responsible for International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) matters in Riyadh and a member of Ernst & Young’s Middle East IFRS desk. Thomas also serves on the Firm’s various subject matter IFRS expert committees. A significant portion of Thomas’ Assurance portfolio comprise clients operating in the Financial Services sector. He has also worked with our Transaction Advisory Teams in London working on due diligence assignments. He has also lead special examination assignments of large commercial Banks for the Saudi Central Bank.

Ismail I. Gomaa, PhD. is a professor of accounting and the former dean of the Faculty of Commerce, Alexandria University. He received his doctorate from the University of Florida and served as a faculty member at Alexandria University, University of Florida, the Ohio State University and King Saud University. He is currently the Secretary General of the Business Education Sector of the Supreme Council of Universities in Egypt. Dr. Gomaa also served as the executive director of the distance learning project and an expert in education enhancement at the Ministry of Higher Education. In 2004, he was named as the Consul for Cultural and Educational Affairs of Egypt in Canada. Dr. Gomaa is heavily involved in research and published several articles in reputable accounting journals. Dr. Gomaa is a member of the Teaching and Learning Team of the Program Advisory Committee of the American Accounting Association.

Araya Debessay, PhD, is Visiting Professor, in the Department of Accounting, College of Business Administration, Dammam University, Saudi Arabia. Professor Debessay is on sabbatical leave from the University of Delaware, Department of Accounting and Management Information Systems, where he has served for over 33 years. Dr. Debessay has his first degree Bachelor of Commerce with distinction from Ethiopia. He received MS, MBA and PhD degrees from Syracuse University. Professor Debessay is a CPA, CMA, and CIA. He has worked as a CPA with Coopers and Lybrand. Professor Debessay has been associated with The Siegfried Group, the largest CPA firm in Delaware, for over 12 years as a technical consultant and as an internal inspector. He has also served as at the DuPont Co. as a consultant in the Professional Development Program in Management Accounting. Dr. Debessay has won several teaching awards including the most coveted University of Delaware Outstanding Teaching Award. He is a co-author of two books and several journal articles.

Mazhar M Islam received his PhD and Master degree from Vanderbilt University, USA. Dr. has over twenty-five years of academic experience at the university level with multicultural diversity. Dr. Islam is currently a Professor of Finance in the School of Business and Industry at Florida A&M University. Professor Islam also served as a Professor and a Director of Research in the College of Business Administration at Alabama A&M University. Prior to that he also held full time faculty positions at the Texas A&M University and the State University of New York Systems, and Sultan Qaboos University in Oman. Professor Islam is the editor-in-chief of three refereed journals: American Journal of Finance and Accounting, Global Review of Business and Economic Research, and International Journal of Business Forecasting & Marketing Intelligence. Professor Islam is the founding Chair of the Global Academy of Business and Economic Research (GABER.ORG), and has organized several international conferences, Professor Islam has published over forty refereed articles in journals, and has presented nearly sixty research papers in national and international conferences. His main research interests include the areas of banking and capital markets.

Amarjit Chopra was president of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) during 2010-11 period. Mr. Chopra has more than three decades of standing as a Chartered Accountant. During his tenure in the Central Council of the ICAI, he has been the Chairman of the Accounting Standards Board, Auditing and Assurance Standards Board, and Corporate Laws Committee. He has also been the Chairman of the Expert Advisory Committee, Financial Reporting Review Board, Committee on Corporate Governance, and Committee on Internal Audit of the Institute. Mr. Chopra served on the Board of Bank of Baroda for three years and is currently serving as an independent director with various reputed companies. He is a Fellow Chartered Accountant and holds a master's degree in commerce. Mr. Chopra has also contributed to many articles and is a frequent speaker at national and international seminars and conferences.
